The crab cakes arrived and they were absolutely delicious - nothing like I had ever had before. When I've eaten crab cakes previously they've been a kind of patty mixed with potato and herbs but Loch Fyne's were basically crab meat surrounded by breadcrumbs and then deep fried (I presume). The sauce had a lovely kick to it and complemented the delicateness of the crab beautifully. Personally, I would have liked a little more green on my plate but for just over £10 I can't complain.
I did my best with the fish I really did but there were tiny bones everywhere (I know we were told but I expected it to just be a skeleton of bones that you could pull out). The fish was also pretty bland and fairly fatty. I got the technique down for getting the meat with as little bones as possible but I just got sick of eating it.
I hate writing negative reviews and a lot of this was my fault, but I learnt some lessons. 1. If the waitress says it has bones in, it probably won't just be easy to take out, 2. Ask about salad dressings even if it doesn't say it comes with one on the menu and 3. Don't always go full steam ahead when trying new stuff.
I am proud of me and the SO as we were brave and tried something completely out of our comfort zone but it didn't really pay off and I walked out with a very discontent tummy. (I also had a minor tantrum as we were walking home and just kept saying to the SO 'I'm so sad' - I have a real relationship with food and disappointing food is the worst).
The waitress did warn me about the bone situation and that it was a flat fish (I now know that it means there won't be a good meat to bone ratio) so the blame does lie with me. However, I have a few suggestions that could improve the place in my opinion. 1. Put an accessible fish on a set menu - I'm guessing a set menu is for people that want to try something different and don't want to have to fork out for a meal they don't enjoy, so put something that is easy to eat on the menu. 2. If you are going to put a strong dressing (or any dressing) on a salad write it on the menu, I have a nut allergy and freaked out that it did actually contain nuts (it didn't). 3. Please leave more room between the tables, I'm a size 12 and found it difficult to squeeze between the tables and my seat and banged my hip about 2637136 times.
